The CW’s ‘Supergirl’ to end next year after sixth season

The CW superhero series Supergirl is to end after its upcoming sixth season.

The decision to end the show was made jointly by the US network, along with Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions, which will begin working on the final 20-episode season later this month for broadcast sometime next year.

The series is based upon the classic DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, an alien from the planet Krypton and cousin of the iconic hero Superman, who shares his incredible abilities, which she uses to fight aliens and other threats to the planet.

“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless,” wrote Melissa Benoist, who portrays Kara on the show, on social media.

“She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”

Benoist added: “I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”

Supergirl originated on CBS before moving to The CW for its second season onward. It is the second series in CW’s ‘Arrowverse’ to draw to a close, following the finale of its founding series Arrow earlier this year.

Continuing shows in this shared superhero world, which often crossover with one another, include The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman and the upcoming Superman & Lois, which is a direct spin-off from Supergirl.
