PBS Masterpiece books an ‘Atlantic Crossing’

US broadcaster PBS Masterpiece has acquired TV broadcast rights to Cinenord’s upcoming World War Two drama series Atlantic Crossing.

This latest sale follows recent deals with networks in Russia, Australia and across Europe, struck by distributor Beta Film, with the show recently celebrating its world premiere at the Canneseries international TV festival.

PBS Distribution also acquired US distribution rights.

Produced by Cinenord, in co-production with Beta Film, for Norway’s NRK, where it will launch later this month, the 8 x 60-minute series stars Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) and Sofia Helin (The Bridge) and is based on the true story of Norwegian crown princess Märtha, who flees from Norway and seeks refuge in the US’ White House.

There, she tries to convince President Roosevelt to help save her country and Europe from the Nazis, but Roosevelt does not want to alienate his voters, who are strongly opposed to the US entering the war.

“I think the American audience will be surprised and amazed by Atlantic Crossing, a true story about love and devotion to country,” says Susanne Simpson, EP of PBS Masterpiece. “We’re thrilled to present this show with incredible performances by Kyle MacLachlan and Sofia Helin.”

Beta Film’s managing director Moritz von Kruedener added: “European drama has a long tradition of traveling well beyond local borders. The fact that Atlantic Crossing has been picked by PBS for their prestigious slot and therefore will reach a nationwide audience in the United States, is a proof for the ever-growing quality of fiction made in Europe.”
