HBO Max orders ‘Bake Off’ in Mexico, marking country’s first unscripted original

HBO Max has ordered its first original unscripted production in Mexico, with a local version of cookery format The Great Bake Off.

The 10-part show is being produced by WarnerMedia Latin America, which previously adapted local versions of the Love Productions format in Argentina and Chile.

The Mexican version will focus on the baking prowess of local celebrities, who will attempt to impress judges with their creations.

The show, which is in production in Mexico City, marks the fifth adaptation of the format in Latin America, after Canal 4 in Uruguay struck a deal with distributor BBC Studios (BBCS) earlier this month. It has also been produced in Brazil, while other international versions have aired in the US, Germany and South Africa.

André Renaud, BBCS’s SVP of global format sales, said: “Viewers are hungry to find feel-good and entertaining content across new platforms and services and our flexible approach at BBC Studios means that we work closely with our partners to bring incredible formats like this to a wider audience.”

HBO Max yesterday confirmed it would be launching across Latin America on 29 June, despite the recent decision by owner AT&T to spin the OTT operator’s WarnerMedia division off into a new company with Discovery.
