HBO Max starts global expansion with Lat Am & Caribbean launch
WarnerMedia has launched streamer HBO Max in Latin America and the Caribbean, marking its first roll-out outside of the US.
The streamer, which is now available in 39 territories across the regions, will offer local content such as Mexican women’s soccer series Las Bravas and the Gabriela de la Garza-starring Love Spells, as well as US originals such as The Flight Attendant and library shows.
HBO Max said it will produce 100 local originals in Latin America over the next two years, while the service will also offer sports such as the UEFA Champions League football.
The streamer will not offer day-and-date releases of Warner Bros. cinematic slate as it is doing in the US. Instead, subscribers in the region will have access to movies like In The Heights and Dune at no additional cost 35 days after their initial release.
A cheaper mobile-only offering starting at $3 per month, which streams in SD on one screen, is being offered alongside a standard tier that offers access to three simultaneous users in quality of up to 4K. A 50% discount off the regular monthly plan is also being offered, active for as long as viewers maintain their subscription without interruption.
Similar to the service in the US, users who have an existing HBO linear subscription through partners like Claro and Tim in Brazil will have access to HBO Max for no extra cost, while existing HBO GO subscribers will see their subscription migrate.
The streamer is headed up in the region by Luis Durán, GM of HBO Max for Latin America, and Johannes Larcher, who leads HBO Max International. The streamer will be rolled out in Europe later this year.
