Hulu in Japan and France Télévisions have linked up with US-based producer Legendary Television and Dynamic Television on a drama based on best-selling Japanese manga series Kami, No Shizuku.

Drops Of God follows a woman who travels to Tokyo following the death of her father to find he has left her an extraordinary wine collection in his will. However, to claim the inheritance she must compete with a brilliant young oenologist who her father took under his wing.

The 8 x 60-minute show, which has started production, is being written by Quoc Dang Tran (Marianne, Parallel) and directed by Oded Ruskin (No Man’s Land), with Dynamic’s Klaus Zimmermann attached to produce. It is being filmed on location in France, Italy, and Japan, with Fleur Geffrier (Elle) and Tomohisa Yamashita (The Head) starring.

Legendary, Dynamic, France Télévisions and Hulu in Japan are co-producing the drama in partnership with Adline Entertainment. Legendary is handling worldwide sales for all territories apart from France and Japan.

“When we first heard about the adaptation of Drops Of God, with one of the two leads being French and the story taking place not only in Tokyo but also in France, we were thrilled with the innovative idea,” said Kazufumi Nagasawa, MD & chief content officer at Hulu Japan, which has previously been a copro partner on shows such as HBO’s Miss Sherlock and Mediapro’s The Head.

“Legendary Television’s global division strives to bring the quality genre and character-driven content that Legendary is known for to local language projects,” said Legendary’s Anne Thomopoulos. “Drops Of God is the perfect opportunity to expand these efforts into France and Japan, adding to our existing development and production slate that already has projects underway in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Mexico, among other territories.”

Zimmerman added: “Drops Of God is truly an international and innovative project that fits Dynamic’s DNA to produce high-quality drama.”
