Tubi preps first original adult animation with time-travelling ‘Freak Brothers’
Fox-owned AVOD streamer Tubi has unveiled its first original adult animated series, which is based on a cult classic underground comic series.
The Freak Brothers has been produced by US-based WTG Enterprises and is based on Gilbert Shelton’s The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers.
It chronicles the escapades of a trio of stoner anti-establishment characters and their cat, who wake up from a 50-year nap after smoking a magical strain of weed in 1969, and must adjust to life with a new family in present-day San Francisco.
The first two episodes of the eight-parter will debut 14 November, with cast including Woody Harrelson, John Goodman and Tiffany Haddish.
The show is executive produced by Courtney Solomon (Mr. Church, Cake) and Mark Canton (Power), alongside producers Alan Cohen and Alan Freedland (King of the Hill).
Adam Lewinson, chief content officer at Tubi, said: “This comedy is 50 years in the making and we are thrilled to have it debut on Tubi as our first original animated comedy, marking a new step for Tubi as we expand our adult humour offerings.”
Fox said the show would anchor its expansion into adult animation, joining almost 7,000 comedy movies and TV series on the platform. These include stand-up specials featuring Def Comedy Jam and Jim Gaffigan, to live-action such as Weekend at Bernie’s, and adult animations The PJs and Australia’s Regular Old Bogan.
