‘It’s A Sin’s Red partners with John Boyne for ‘Echo Chamber’ series
Red Production Company, the UK indie behind Channel 4 hit It’s A Sin, has acquired the rights to John Boyne’s novel The Echo Chamber.
The StudioCanal-owned company will turn the book into a 10 x 30-minute returnable series, which Boyne himself will adapt for TV.
The Echo Chamber tells the story of the Cleverley family live a gilded life, little realising how precarious their privilege is, just one tweet away from disaster. After one social media mistake, it takes just five days for their lives to be turned on their heads and come crashing down around them.
Boyne is perhaps best known for his 2006 novel The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, which has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide and has been adapted for cinema, theatre, ballet and opera. His other works include The Heart’s Invisible Furies, which is currently in development with Element, and A Ladder to the Sky, which is to be made into a film adapted by Andres Heinz (Black Swan).
Manchester-based Red is also behind UK dramas such as Ridley Road, Queer As Folk, Happy Valley and Last Tango In Halifax. Its upcoming projects include No Return for ITV, Stay Close for Netflix and Anansi Boys for Amazon Prime.
Sarah Doole, who replaced Nicola Shindler as CEO of Red last year, commented: “I have always loved John Boyne’s beautiful writing, but The Echo Chamber was the most brilliant surprise.
“It is hilariously funny – a gasp-inducingly caustic and biting satire about cancel culture and modern Britain. It is a story that is absolutely for now and it takes a writer of John’s skill and confidence to pull it off.”
