‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ reportedly in works at Paramount+

CBS Studios and Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout are reportedly in development on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, a new entry in the iconic sci-fi franchise, for Paramount+.

The series will follow a group of cadets being trained for leadership roles within the space fleet of the United Federation of Planets that is at the heart of every Star Trek show to date.

According to Deadline, Absentia co-creator Gaia Violo is currently working on the direction of the as-yet unannounced series, which is hoped to enter production by the end of this year. This would make it the next Star Trek project in the works behind the previously revealed Section 31-focused series starring Michelle Yeoh.

During Paramount+’s Television Critics Association (TCA) panel for the Star Trek franchise, Nicole Clemens, president of Paramount+ original scripted series confirmed the Section 31 show was still in the works and said that there will be further news about it shortly.

Kurtzman, who last year extended his overall deal with CBS to helm the Star Trek franchise until 2026, also revealed that “there is another one” in the works, but wished to remain “tight lipped” about the project.

His Secret Hideout banner currently produces five Star Trek shows for CBS Studios and Paramount+: Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Prodigy and the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It is also in development on the Section 31 show, which will see Yeoh reprise her role from Star Trek: Discovery

“We have to think several years out,” Kurtzman said at the event. “We’re thinking about knowing we’ll want new shows on the air two or three years from now so we have to start planning those now. There’s a bunch of things in development now that are starting to take shape and we’re super excited about it.”
