Starz to expand ‘Outlander’ world with prequel series in development

Outlander

US network Starz is reportedly in development on a prequel series to its hit historical fantasy show Outlander.

Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts is expected to return to write and executive produce the spin-off, while Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis will also be back to exec produce under their Tall Ship Productions label.

According to Variety, Sony Pictures Television will be the studio, as it was with Outlander, and a writers’ room is currently being put together.

Based on the novel series by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander tells the story of Claire Randall (Catrionia Balfe), a former military nurse from 1945 who is transported back in time to 1743. The show’s sixth season will debut on Starz on 6 March and it has already been renewed for a seventh.

News of the spin-off comes after Gabaldon recently revealed that she is writing a prequel novel to the book series, which will focus on the character of Ellen MacKenzie. It is unknown if this series will be an adaptation of that book.

Outlander is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Left Bank Pictures and Story Mining & Supply Company, in association with Sony Pictures Television.
