Netflix orders ‘Cobra Kai’ creators’ action-comedy, axes Meghan Markle animation
Netflix has commissioned Obliterated, a new action-comedy series from Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald.
The trio will serve as executive producers (alongside Dina Hillier) and showrunners on the new series via their Counterbalance Entertainment production banner, while Sony Pictures Television is attached as the studio.
Obliterated is described as a “high octane action-comedy” that tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas.
After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world.
Meghan Markle animation dropped
In related news, Netflix has cancelled the development Pearl, the animated series set to be exec produced by Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, via her prodco Archewell Productions.
The series would have centred around the adventures of a 12-year-old girl who took inspiration from important women throughout history.
Pearl had marked the first animated series from Markle and Prince Harry’s Archewell Productions, which signed a multi-year deal with Netflix after the British royals launched the then-unnamed prodco in September 2020.
The cancellation comes as Netflix seeks to cut costs following its plummeting subscriber numbers, which have prompted the streaming giant to make plans to move into ad-supported streaming.
