Netflix developing animated ‘Ghostbusters’ series
Netflix is developing a new animated series based on the Ghostbusters comedy-horror franchise, with the writers of the latest feature film attached.
Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, who were behind 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, will executive produce the project, which is being made in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, and Ghost Corp.
No further details have yet been revealed about the project, which was announced by Netflix on the third day of its Geeked Week this week.
The first Ghostbusters film was launched in 1984 and has gone on to become a pop culture classic. Directed and produced by Ivan Reitman, it followed a team of eccentric scientists who launch a ghost-catching business in New York.
This was followed by a direct sequel in 1989 and a spin-off film in 2016. Reitman’s son Jason, who is behind the Netflix project, directed the latest instalment in the series, last year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Previous animated outings include ABC’s The Real Ghostbusters, which ran for seven seasons from 1986-1991 and its follow-up Extreme Ghostbusters, which ran for a single season in 1997.
