Roku Channel steps in to save TBS comedy ‘Chad’ after WBD cancellation
The Roku Channel has stepped in to save Nasim Pedrad’s comedy series Chad, after Warner Bros. Discovery’s TBS scrapped the show.
The second season had been completed but was a casualty of WBD’s decision to cancel numerous shows that were almost produced or in post, as part of a wider tax write-off strategy.
Roku has now taken exclusive US rights to the second season as well as non-exclusive first season rights.
The story follows Pedrad as a Persian-American teenaged boy and had been praised for its authentic portrayal of life. Its first season had been TBS’s most-watched new scripted comedy.
Roku has become an increasingly active player in original content, acquiring Quibi’s library and offering the Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist movie.
Colin Davis, Roku’s head of scripted originals, said: “The Roku Channel is committed to championing creativity and fostering great storytelling.
“Chad is a story years-in-the-making that deserved to be told. We’re thrilled to be partnering closely with Nasim and her team to bring the next chapter of this exceptional series both to existing fans, as well as sharing it for the first time with new audiences, on The Roku Channel.”
