MGM+ and Prime Video bring Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ universe to TV

US network MGM+ (fka Epix) and Amazon Prime Video have ordered multiple superhero series based around the Sony Pictures universe of Marvel characters.

The first title being produced under the multi-series agreement is Silk: Spider Society, from Sony Pictures Television, which will follow the hero Cindy Moon (aka Silk).

Created for Marvel Comics by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, Moon was a classmate of Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man), who was bitten by the same radioactive spider that gave him his superhero powers. After escaping imprisonment, she searches for her missing family on her way to becoming the superhero known as Silk.

The series, which is the only one confirmed so far, will debut in the US on MGM+’s linear channel before launching globally on Prime Video.

As part of her recently signed multi-year overall television deal, The Walking Dead’s Angela Kang will serve as showrunner, having developed the series alongside Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, as well as Amy Pascal, who will serve as executive producers.

Sony holds the rights to more than 900 Marvel Comics characters, based largely around the character of Spider-Man and his supporting cast of heroes and villains, having so far focused on cinematic outings such as Venom and Morbius.

These characters fall outside of Disney’s established Marvel Cinematic Universe (and Disney+ shows like Loki and She-Hulk) , though Sony struck a deal with Disney and Marvel Studios in 2015 for Spider-Man to appear in their big-screen adventures, most recently in the feature Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Sony’s recent live-action and animated reimagining of the Spider-Man franchise has represented some of the most dynamic superhero storytelling in film,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “Together with Angela Kang’s creative vision, we couldn’t be more pleased to bring Silk: Spider Society to our MGM+ and Prime Video customers.”
