TBI’s 2023 Predictions: Andrea Scrosati, Group COO & CEO Continental Europe, Fremantle
As the new year gets underway, TBI talks to some of the biggest names in the global TV industry to get their thoughts on the major trends and best shows coming up in the next 12 months.
Here, Andrea Scrosati, Group COO & CEO Continental Europe at Fremantle, talks AVOD and FAST growth, unscripted demand and True Detective.
What is the biggest growth area for your company this year?
We will continue to invest and grow our core entertainment business, delivering to our key linear clients but also leveraging on the strong demand for unscripted that we see coming from global platforms following the success of shows like Too Hot To Handle.
We also are growing our film and global documentary capabilities, following our strong results in this area in 2022, with several new titles delivering in 2023. Finally, an important focus will be to further integrate the new companies who joined us in 2022, to boost their potential and increase collaboration across the group.
What is the key trend going to be this year?
Production and financing models will need to adapt and innovate to manage several external factors such as inflation and stock market effects. We expect to continue to see growth in non-English scripted and unscripted productions mainly for streaming platforms, with more of a local focus vs global ambition.
Potentially we could see more co-productions between Europe and the US, this will also be affected if there will be indeed a writer’s strike in the US. Finally, I personally believe that AVOD and FAST business will continue to grow substantially, especially in the English language markets, and this will give additional value to deep libraries.
What is your New Year’s resolution and why?
Workwise, I am looking forward to visiting our teams and talents around the world – as great as video calls are, nothing beats the quality time spent with people in their countries to really understand their priorities, their challenges, and be of true support. Personally, I am looking forward to being even more curious, exploring cultures, ideas, art. Never stop learning, never stop being surprised, never stop asking questions.
What show (from outside of your own company) are you most looking forward to?
The new seasons of Succession and True Detective are top of my watch-list, and I am looking forward to many movies, starting with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
