Paramount+ beams aboard ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ as sci-fi franchise expands

Paramount+ is expanding its long-running sci-fi adventure Star Trek franchise with an order for a new spin-off, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Beginning production in 2024, the CBS Studios show will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets who come together “to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism.”

Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, the cadets will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

The Academy is where iconic starship captains from the franchise, such as James T Kirk, Christopher Pike and Jean Luc Picard, studied to be become space explorers.

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau will serve as co-showrunners and will executive produce the series alongside executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber.

The series premiere episode is written by Gaia Violo and the show will be produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy joins the ongoing missions of recently renewed franchise stablemates Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks, while Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery are both now winding down.
