Round-up: More4 visits Fred’s ‘Emergency Ward’; Netflix yanks out ‘Sweet Tooth’; 5Star lands ‘Love Gone Wrong’; BBC picks up Zinc duo
More4 visits Fred’s Emergency Ward
UK channel More4 has struck a deal with Australia’s Fred Media that will see the UK broadcaster acquiring three seasons (30 x 60-minutes) of its obs-doc, The Emergency Ward (originally titled Emergency).
The show, which premieres 7 May, is produced by Fred Media’s parent company WTFN Entertainment and was originally ordered for Australia’s Nine Network.
The programme follows doctors at The Royal Melbourne, one of Australia’s biggest and busiest emergency hospitals, as they fight to save patients suffering from a wide range of life-threatening injuries.
The deal, negotiated between Fred Media’s Mem Bakar and Channel 4’s senior acquisitions manager Polly Scates, is for 30 hours across season one, season three and the upcoming season four, which is currently in production and due to deliver later this year.
This latest contract follows last year’s deal which saw More4 acquire two seasons of WTFN-produced Space Invaders from Fred Media.
Netflix yanks out ‘Sweet Tooth’
Netflix has ordered a third and final season of fantasy drama series Sweet Tooth from Warner Bros. Television.
Showrunner Jim Mickle teased that this last instalment will be “an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale.”
Season two of the show debuted on Netflix last month, garnering 48.3 million hours viewed during its first four days of release.
The show follows Gus (Christian Convery), a hybrid deer-boy in a world where a mysterious event led to the appearance of part human-part animal people who are feared and hunted.
5Star lands ‘Love Gone Wrong
Paramount-owned 5Star in the UK has ordered 10-part documentary series Sleeping With My Murderer from true crime indie FirstLookTV.
Distributed by Abacus Media Rights, the show will document ten tragically ill-fated love stories. Reflecting upon the early signs of abuse, it exposes weaknesses in the systems designed to police and protect people from this potentially lethal behaviour, with contributions from family members, law enforcement and legal professionals.
Through unrivalled access to the inner workings of these relationships, each episode is centred around the accounts of those closest to the victims, as they share their stories of partnerships that began with a meeting full of hope, and ended in murder.
BBC picks up Zinc duo
UK pubcaster the BBC has ordered two returning shows from Zinc Media Group owned factual producer Tern.
Martin Compston’s Northern Fling (6 x 30-minutes) follows the Line Of Duty actor, along with his best friend Phil MacHugh, as they embark on an epic northern adventure – searching for all that it means to be from the ‘North’ starting in Shetland, before travelling the length of Norway to lift the lid on what we can learn from the most northern of our Scandinavian neighbours. This commission is the sequel to Martin Compston’s Scottish Fling, which followed the duo across Scotland.
Meanwhile, Scotland’s Sacred Islands With Ben Fogle (4 x 60-minutes) has been commissioned for its second series, with Fogle once again exploring the connection between stunning landscapes and spiritual belief across several beautiful islands.
Both series are expected to broadcast later this year. Scotland’s Sacred Islands With Ben Fogle will be shown on BBC Scotland, BBC One and iPlayer and Martin Compston’s Northern Fling will air on BBC Scotland, BBC Two and iPlayer.
